Physioform Pilates
healing body & mind

"Listen to your body"

"Move in rhythm with your breath"

"Bring the mind into the body"

What is Physiotherapy Led Pilates?

Physiotherapy led Pilates is a complete body workout that aims to improve core stability, flexibility & postural awareness.  It is a mind-body form of exercise that places great emphasis on initiating movement from a central core of stability.  Physiotherapists are highly trained in assessing posture, movement dysfunctions and muscle imbalances.  Their in depth knowledge of anatomy and injury enables them to teach you appropriate exercises to assist in rehabilitation.

Core Stability

Conscious activation of core muscles enables movement from a stable base during exercise

Postural Awareness

Exercises improve alignment therefore posture improves both in and out of the class

Flexibility

Overly tight muscles are lengthened restoring balance once again to the body.

Relaxation

Concentrating on the movement means the mind let’s go of distraction and we become more calm and peaceful.

Breathing

Movements are in rhythm with the breath, using physiological methods to enhance relaxation and control.

Body Awareness

Visualisations empower participants to develop and understand their own body.

“The Classes”

Before joining a class you initially attend an introductory class in order to learn the basics.  This also enables your physiotherapist to assess your core and any injuries.  Your goals and intentions are taken into consideration and following this you are then offered a place in a class appropriate to your needs.  Beginners and intermediate level classes are separate from advanced classes and we have specific classes for over 50’s.  During the class itself you are closely supervised by your physiotherapist in order to ensure that you are using the correct muscles and feeling comfortable and free from any pain or discomfort.  Exercises are adjusted and modifications offered according to your body’s needs.  Classes are limited in size in order to allow this personal approach.  Clients normally complete a 6 week beginners course, progressing as their needs and wishes allow to intermediate and advanced if so desired.  We use a range of equipment including foam rollers, weighted balls, therabands and magic circles to keep the classes interesting, vibrant and fun!

I have been attending classes with Emma for over 5 years .Not only have I benefited from them but I also enjoy them.   As an over 70 starting to feel the occasional stiffness and aches and pains of an not so youthful body I feel very safe in the way the classes are structured and run . Emma’ s knowledge and training as a physiotherapist combined with her training in Pilates makes for well thought out routines and movements which help loosen ,strengthen and support the whole body.  The emphasis in classes is on working at ones own level (whatever the limitations and needs one’s body has ) in a supportive ,encouraging and thoughtful environment.

I am constantly impressed by Emma’s ability to remember the particular needs of each individual and find ways of helping the person to work with them

Her constant good humour ,her desire to support and encourage and her kindness all work together to make her Pilates classes fun,  helpful and well balanced .

Having a qualified physiotherapist to show me the ropes has been a revelation. I finally “get it!” 🙂 Emma Steenson is wonderfully patient, doesn’t make you feel ridiculous, is encouraging and always smiles. So glad I found her.

I am new to pilates but would recommend Emma Steenson’s physio-led classes to anyone. I have struggled with back and hamstring problems over the years (made worse by cycling) and the difference after only four weeks of classes is amazing. Emma is an experienced and highly regarded physio and that expertise really comes out at the class.

I attended Emma for pain in my lower back, hips and legs and was lucky enough to choose Emma Steenson for some physiotherapy. Over the next few months Emma listened and asked many questions on every aspect of my life to identify possible issues which were contributing to or causing my problems. At each appointment she administered hands-on treatment, massaging and manipulating my back and legs. I was also given a few exercises to do in between visits. I honestly didn’t believe that things would improve as I had been in pain for so long and had had physiotherapy previously. However within one month the constant daily pain had almost gone. Over the subsequent months we continued with treatment to the point where I have been able to resume exercising and now armed with advice from Emma on posture, exercises, a workplace assessment etc I feel positive once more. Emma is a fantastic practitioner, knowledgeable, interested and and motivated and was a joy to work with.

Since starting Pilates, I am truly amazed by how much of a transformation I have felt. Even after a couple of sessions I was surprised by how easily and quickly I could identify a number of benefits, both physical and mental. I think it’s important for me to emphasise how lucky I have been to start and continue Pilates with Emma. Having Emma as a Pilates instructor has made the experience as good as it has been, classes with Emma allow me to learn technique, improve my fitness and health and importantly, the classes are enjoyable. The benefits of pilates have surpassed my expectations entirely, and I attribute part of that to having Emma as an instructor.

I am one of those people moaning about exercise classes -I don’t like them as they are usually ineffective, much as some are quite good fun. Before coming to Emma’s class, I had tried a couple of Pilates classes but was always disappointed with how little they did for me -in fact, I knew that the problem was me not understanding the instructions very well, but I was not willing to do any reading prior to the class to understand what those positions were all about. Emma, however, was really patient explaining the positions and then correcting them for each and every one of us. This personal approach makes all the difference to me and, whether it is due to her physiotherapy training and experience or just her natural patience and teaching inclinations, I think Emma does a fantastic job with us! I could not recommend her highly enough!

I went to Emma ( physiotherapist ) first as a patient as I had a hip injury which prevented me from participating in exercise for six months. After one treatment session and following her exercises I joined her pilates classes. I have been to pilates before in a leisure centre but found Emma’s class so much more beneficial and enjoyable.

Emma explains the exercises in easy to follow steps.  She checks to see if you are doing the exercises correctly and safely.  Emma’s pilates class has greatly improved my posture, core strength and toned my stomach and bum.  Previous to starting Emma’s pilates class I was able to cycle for one minute at a time before the pain in my hip/buttock hit.  Last week I cycled around Millport, painfree.  The following day I could run five miles without pain.  Thanks Emma!

I have thoroughly enjoyed Pilates with Emma.  I started attending as I was suffering from extremely uncomfortable neck and shoulder pain due to poor posture from work.  Pilates has helped me immensely and has made me much more aware of my posture.  I find myself checking my posture and remedying several times throughout the day.  Emma’s classes are very good and she is such a fantastic teacher.  It is great being able to see yourself develop each week and building up strength.  Emma is very encouraging and the classes are designed so that you can modify each exercise if necessary, until you are ready to progress to each level.
